Commuter Logjam Clears As BART Resumes Transbay Service

A tough morning commute for thousands of East Bay commuters was eased Thursday as transbay service resumed for BART customers.

Transbay BART service was down for most of the day Thursday but untangled just enough by about 3:50 p.m. to give haggard commuters hope and keep them relatively happy.

Lamorindans who scrambled to find transportation across the bay after a large-scale fire burned a West Oakland building to the ground -- taking critical BART equipment with it and shutting down cross-bay service -- reported an easier time of it during their return commute.

Patcher and Moraga resident Jon Chamber summed up his commute thusly: "Drive in wasn't too bad. Canyon to Piedmont carpool to 980 to 7th Street onramp-every trick I know. Getting back home-not so good, with Giants game over on top of extra morning traffic. BART is running."

A BART spokesman said transbay service in both directions was realized at 5 p.m.
