Sunday Singalong - Political Science

One of singer/songwriter Randy Newman's early and funniest songs, in honor of the UN General Assembly last week.

Irony. Humor. These are not easy things to put into popular songs. Randy Newman is a master at the art form. His song "Short People" outraged an entire subset of height-challenged humans, who felt he was poking fun at them. The entire album "Good Ol' Boys" is about the way southerners look at themselves, and it infuriated more than a few people. "I Love LA" is a song that isn't necessarily about loving La La Land.

But before he wrote those songs, Newman composed a piece of political poetry that manages to do two things: it serves to speak for a large contingent of Americans who actually believe America would be better off if we "dropped the big one now" on those ungrateful countries who "despise us and they hate us." On the other hand, he gives those who do not feel that way a little comic relief. It's a political win/win, hard enough to do in 1972, nearly impossible today. But Newman does it here.

So, in honor of the UN General Assembly last week, here is Randy Newman's "Political Science."

Enjoy.

It must be awful living in the face of such insight. And being able to express it so well. And having access to a mass media form with which it may be disseminated. Everyone has a way of thinking unique to them. I've always thought Randy and I were close, in a sardonic, metaphysical, meat and potatoes sort of way. I'm breaking out the vinyl, Jim. And thanks for reminding me! I love Randy Newman! In a metaphysical sort of way. I keep forgetting to laugh.

Burn On. Burn on, big river, burn on. It's about when the Cuyahoga River caught fire. That's right. It caught on fire.

Now I have short people caught in my head again. 20 years fine. Now again. Thanks.

Thanks, Jim. I have always liked Randy Newman and this is one of his superb songs with humor, irony, and a way for Americans to laugh at themselves... I also love Burn On on that album. Randy newman is also an accomplished movie soundtrack composer...
