Music Obituary: Miss Etta James Dies at 73

One of the biggest voices in the business left us all Friday morning.

Etta James, the "big voice" behind "At Last," died Friday at a hospital in Riverside, Calif.

A singer with power and range and emotion, James could make the raunchiest blues tunes ring and her most tender love songs bring tears to the eyes of audiences for followed her with faithful devotion over her career

Born Jamesetta Hawkins, she gained famed with her signature "At Last," "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind." Plagued by a number of personal problems over her life, including a much publicized battle with drug addition, James garnered six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.

Manager Lupe De Leon told The Associated Press James died due to complications caused by her leukemia.

As one of her fans wrote upon hearing of her death: "Peace for Etta... At Last."
