'Jaws' Plays Free at the Orinda Theater June 13

The movie that kept America from ocean swimming for a few years is returning to the big screen on June 13, as Steven Spielberg's classic film "Jaws" comes to the Orinda Theater.

The 7 p.m. showing is free and sponsored by the California Independent Film Festival and Diablo Magazine's Monthly Classic Film Series.

The 1975 movie broke a lot of rules that were in place for films in the mid-70s. The young director was a concern of the studio big-wigs, and the mechanical shark kept breaking down. The film had a star or two, but many others were then-unknowns, and for most of the movie, the main star (the shark) was absent from the screen.

Yet, it was just that kind of storytelling--keeping the audience guessing and imagining--that broke box office records that summer and, despite upsetting a lot of moviegoers with scenes of gore and gobbled children, the film remains one of the best-loved of all time.

Did you see this movie when it first came out? What was your reaction?
