Harry Higgins has been playing the banjo for 57 years, and he continues to perform every morning in front of Peet’s Coffee and Tea on Locust Street in Walnut Creek from 8 to 9 a.m.
“It’s just for fun,” he said.
He and a group of friends gather to play American sing-along classics and entertain those who are sipping their first cup of coffee, getting the work day started with a little entertainment.
But it’s no light-weight man at the banjo. Higgins was inducted in 2008 to the Banjo Hall of Fame. He is, in a very musical sense, a player.
Higgins led the band at the Red Garter in San Francisco for 17 years, and led the band that played at San Francisco 49er games for many years as well.
He moved from San Francisco to Walnut Creek in 1970, and now people getting their morning lattes can enjoy a shot of Higgins as well.
See you there.
