Vote! You Know You're From Lamorinda...

Here are the finalists from our unofficial "You know you're from Lamorinda..." contest. Cast a vote for your favorite.

We did this on a whim and had fun with it and apparently so did you. Here are the finalists from our "" contest. Vote for your favorite by submitting the number associated with the funniest response in the "Comments" thread for all to see.

Winner will get their choice of a Starbucks or Nordstrom gift card. Here we go:

"You Know You're From Lamorinda...

  1. ...when you covertly quiz the kids of your new neighbors to determine whether they will lower the API scores." - Chris Nicholson
  2. ...you think you were poor growing up because your family only had TWO cars and neither was an SUV." - Amanda
  3. ...when you ask your neighbor what kind of lawnmower he has and he responds "Guatemalan, I think.'" - Alec Binnie
  4. ...when your 5 year old tells her kindergarten teacher that her favorite foods are salmon and caesar salad." - Diane
  5. ...when the swim teams need a rule that au pairs can't sub for parents timing at meets." - Kathleen

Thanks for playing!

5. But, being from the south, think you missed a really good one.....when you hit a
deer in town you don't consider it free meat.

Number 3

#5 is great! I vote for that one.
Ed Sharp September 14, 2011 at 11:52 pm
#3 because it's so un-PC. (and no not an IT nerd reference)

#2 gets my vote. These are great!

C-Nich, I was counting on you to make your excellent point about the general tenor of these, but it appears you have gone to the other side. Well, I will just stick with knowing I have a safe small town to come home to from my job in a business and cultural hub. I'll stack my PC-skeptical credentials against anyone (though "PC" is so 90s, see blistering letters to the Daily Bruin editor, circa 1991, regarding a column that I wrote, poking fun at another columnist who had contended that she was racist simply because she was white), but I don't think No. 3 is funny.
Eugene McGrane September 15, 2011 at 02:19 am
love number 5!
Chris Nicholson September 15, 2011 at 03:07 am
Sorry. Too busy defending rapists on another thread. Plus, I didn't think it was cool to vote for myself..... Re: The Bruin, I must have missed that edition. I am UCLA Class of '92. I may have sold you a computer, as I worked (as one of my jobs) in the ASUCLA computer store (in the bookstore).
Shannon W. September 15, 2011 at 04:03 am
All pretty funny, but I'll go with #4 bc it hits close to home.
Alec Binnie September 15, 2011 at 04:42 am
Tony, I'm sorry to have offended you, so please accept my apology. I intended to poke fun at Lamorindins not the good people who work in our community. I have found myself cringing at more than a few comments like the example I gave. If it's any consolation, I think #5 is the best of these; so I'm voting for Kathleen. And I was Daily Bruin Viewpoint section editor from 1988 to '89, so I missed your blistering letters by a couple of years.
Bridgette Navarre Thomas September 15, 2011 at 10:41 am
I vote for #2! Hats off to #5, too. All very funny.

T-Rod: On reflection, I think I erred. I am deleting my vote for #3. Not because it is offensive and arguably a bit racist. I don't think those attributes are incompatible with humor, in the right context. I revert to my prior observation that most of these choices reveal a unwarranted exclusionary conceit that leaves a bad taste. I'd hate for something like that to "sum us up" as a community.
@Alec: I do think it was clever/funny--- just not what I would want as our slogan.

Holly Golightly says: "One's au pair SHOULD be allowed to time the sprites at swim meets... but Numero 5 is the funniest and gets my vote!"
Tony Rodriguez September 15, 2011 at 03:27 pm
CooL. Just to be clear, i was not offended, I just didn't think it was funny. Welcome back to the Resistance, CN.
theresa September 15, 2011 at 03:56 pm
number 4 for me; not because it's funny, but because it's true!
Brad Katkowsky September 15, 2011 at 09:32 pm
I was going to vote for 5 but I'm changing my vote to 3.
Congodog September 19, 2011 at 11:23 am
#3 is condescending and racist and beneath the dignity of the good citizens of Lamorinda. #4 is the least kitschy, but cute and my choice.

Gentle Readers -
Just a reminder that this thread is for voting and voting only, please. If you have a position or want to make a point, please go to Speakers Corner at: http://patch.com/A-kG0x We'll be closing down voting on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. PST and tabulating the "votes" at that time. Again, this was for fun, has no bearing on any "official slogan" associated with Lamorinda and means a gift card for the winner and that's it. Enjoy. The Sheriff

On several occasions, I have seen 5-6 chickens pecking their way down their steep driveway on theRead More east side of Saint Mary's Road, very close to the Cattle Chute. I had not read this story earlier. On 6/3 or 6/4, I saw a black hen, alone, out in the road right at the point of the Moraga Commons. It was pecking the pavement on Moraga Road, as cars turning north from Saint Mary's Road were avoiding it. I hope the chicken crossed the road to the trail on the other side. Better yet, I hope it turned around and followed that trail right back to the Cattle Chute and home.
