Two Lafayette Students Find Immortality on the Fourth Bore

Chaya Tong and Daniell McCann have had their pencil drawings turned into concrete sculptures that will hang over the new fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel.

Chaya Tong's work will live on for decades and be seen by millions. Not bad for eight years old.

The Springhill Elementary student was one of six young people to draw designs for "medallions" which will hang over the new fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel.

Daniell McCann of Acalanes High also won the contest.

Both students chose themes that depicted the natural grandeur of their environment.

"My drawing illustrates what I love best about Contra Costa County: rolling green hills, bright sun, and the many plants," said Chaya.

"I tried to capture Mt. Diablo’s rugged hills with the classic oak tree in front.  It uses common art deco design defining the most important elements that I believe represent Contra Costa County," said McCann.

The other Contra Costa winner was Penelope Watson of Pleasant Hill Middle School.
