The Week Ahead: Veterans Day, Pre-School Fair, Pajama Jam

Some of the events happening this week in Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda

On Monday morning, a ceremony commemorating Veterans Day will be held in Moraga.

The event is from 9 a.m to 10 a.m. at Moraga Commons Park, 1425 St. Mary’s Road.

On Tuesday evening, an exhibit featuring art from Afghanistan will debut in Lafayette.

The reception for “Student Art from Afghanistan” begins at 6 p.m. in the library gallery at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The exhibit runs until Jan. 13. It’s sponsored by the Lafayette Public Art Committee.

Also on Tuesday evening, the Lafayette City Council and the Lafayette School District board of education will hold a joint meeting.

The session begins at 6 p.m. in the Community Hall at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

On the agenda are reports from the mayor and the superintendent.

The council will also hold its regularly scheduled council meeting beginning at 7 p.m.

On the agenda there is the second reading of the anti-smoking ordinance and funding for new entrance signs to the city.

Also on Tuesday evening, the Moraga School District board of education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The session begins at 7:30 p.m. at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, 1010 Camino Pablo.

On the agenda is the collective bargaining agreement between the district and the California School Employees Association.

Also on Tuesday evening, a seminar on Gov. Jerry Brown’s leadership and legacy will be held in Moraga.

The panel discussion begins at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s College, 1928 St. Mary’s Road.

On Wednesday afternoon, a seminar on opera will be held in Lafayette.

“Discovering Opera: Hansel und Gretel” begins at 1 p.m. in the arts and science room at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The talk will feature opera expert Bradford Wade. The event is sponsored by the Lafayette Senior Center.

Also on Wednesday afternoon, the Moraga Movers will present their monthly “Book Talkers” series.

The discussion on “Shooting Victoria: Madness, Mayhem and the Rebirth of the British Monarchy” begins at 2 p.m. at the Moraga Library, 1500 St. Mary’s Road.

On Wednesday evening, the Moraga Town Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The session begins at 7 p.m. at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, 1010 Camino Pablo.

On the agenda is a discussion ways to enhance the use of the Hacienda de las Flores facility at 2100 Donald Drive.

Also on Wednesday evening, the Lafayette School District board of education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Stanley Middle School library, 3455 School St.

On the agenda are some updated board policies and an update on the Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics curriculum.

On Thursday afternoon, the Oakland zoomobile will visit downtown Lafayette.

The zoo’s animal ambassador will bring small animals to the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd., from noon to 1 p.m.

Also on Thursday afternoon, the Lafayette Garden Club will hold its regular gathering.

The meeting begins at 1 p.m. at Lafayette Christian Church, 584 Glenside Drive.

On Thursday evening, the movie “Cat Ballou” will be shown and discussed in Moraga.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Moraga Library, 1500 St. Mary’s Road.

Also on Thursday evening, a preschool fair for parents will be held in Lafayette.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Oakwood Athletic Club, 4000 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The fair is sponsored by the Lamorinda Moms organization.

Also on Thursday evening, Lafayette Mayor Mike Anderson will deliver a “State of the City” address.

The session begins at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 3780 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The event is sponsored by the Lafayette Homeowners Council.

Also on Thursday evening, a new theatrical production will debut in Moraga.

“And When We Awoke There Was LIght and Light” begins at 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s College, 1928 St. Mary’s Road.

It’s the West Coast premiere of the play.

On Saturday morning, the Fall 2013 Pajama Jam will be held in Moraga.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Rheem Theatre, 350 Park St.

Kids of all ages are invited to wear pajamas to the circus party that includes games, activities, a circus clown and a photo booth.

The jam is sponsored by the Moraga Junior Women's Club.

Also on Saturday morning, a New York Times’ best selling author will speak in Orinda.

New York Times columnist Mark Leibovich’s talk on his book “This Town” begins at 11 a.m. at Orinda Community Church, 10 Irwin Way.

The discussion will center on Leibovich’s observations on life in Washington, D.C.
