This rainbow photo of the Orinda Theatre has been making the rounds.
The photographer, Orinda architect Rick Kattenburg, explained the background of the photo in an email exchange with Patch. The photo has appeared on the cover of the Orinda Chamber of Commerce Directory in 2009-10, and last month in the Lamorinda Book published last month by Diablo magazine.
"I took the shot at dusk after a rare July shower in 2009," said Kattenburg, who was coming back through downtown Orinda after the Felix-Tehaney wedding reception on July 11, 2009.
"I like to think it was part of the magic of their marriage that brought on the unseasonal rain and the rainbow on that day."
Coming through town, Kattenburg saw the double rainbow to the south. "I jumped out of my car and with my trusty office 5mp digital Cannon Powershot A540, with wide angle lens, aligned myself to juxtapose the rainbow with the arcs on the Theatre tower. I caught the colors at the perfect time: Lucky! There's an unusual brownish tone in the sky highlighting the reds, pinks and yellows — both from the neon and the rainbow."
Kattenburg was a yearbook photographer in college. Now, as an architect, he continues to take photos for pleasure and business, but he rarely has an opportunity to catch a double rainbow over the Orinda Theater like he did back in 2009.
