Lafayette Eyes Regional Trail Linkup Grant

The city of Lafayette is involved in talks about linking up regional trails a couple of miles from Lafayette to downtown Walnut Creek.

This would open up hikers, bikers, joggers and dog walkers to a large network of trails around Walnut Creek and the Iron Horse Trail that runs from Concord to Dublin. In Walnut Creek, the Iron Horse Trails passes through Civic Park and runs behind the Safeway at Mount Diablo Boulevard and South Broadway.

A memorandum to support the county in applying for a grant to study the proposed link is expected to go before the Lafayette City Council in January, said Leah Greenblat, a transportation planner for the city of Lafayette. In an email, she stated that there was strong support for that memorandum from the Lafayette Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee earlier this year.

The study would weigh the merits of improving bike lanes and sidewalks along linking thoroughfares such as Olympic Boulevard, or building off-street pathways such as the Lafayette-Moraga trail.

Most of the corridor to create a link would lie in the city of Walnut Creek and unincorporated areas under the jurisdiction of Contra Costa County. The Lafayette-Moraga regional trail has a terminus and parking lot at the Lafayette city border at Olympic Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road.
