The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning across the Bay Area.

A cold front will continue to sweep through the region today, the agency said in its alert. The alert is in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.

The forecast for the Lamorinda area calls for a high of 49 degrees today with the temperature dropping to 30 degrees tonight.

The high is expected to reach only 47 degrees on Thursday and then dip to 35 degrees on Thursday night.

On Friday, there is a chance of rain with a high temperature of 48 degrees. On Friday evening, rain is likely with a low temperature of 38 degrees.

A dusting of snow as low as 1,500 feet is possible, which would create a light blanket on Mount Diablo as well as the Orinda hills.

There is a slight chance of rain on Saturday with the temperature falling to 30 degrees again on Saturday night.

Freezing temperatures can kill crops and sensitive vegetation, the agency explained. They can also harm pets and livestock and could cause unprotected water pipes to burst.

There is also increased risk of hypothermia for those exposed to the inclement weather such as the homeless.
