Four Furry Foxes Fixed For Moraga Release

Update: A limited number of Lindsay Wildlife Museum donors will get to see the Sunday release.

Updated, Oct. 25, quotes from Susan Heckly.

Four baby gray foxes have done their stint in rehab and are ready to gambol and frolic in the freedom of Moraga this weekend.

This is a freedom and a fund-raising story. The Lindsay Wildlife Museum of Walnut Creek is allowing donors to attend the letting loose of the foxes at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at a location in Moraga to be determined.

Three of the fox kits were orphaned when they were about two weeks old and weighed less than half a pound, according to a Lindsay museum press release. The fourth one, with a leg injury, came to Lindsay at the age of 10 weeks.

The four have grown and learned how to hunt. "For predators, the instinct to hunt is just that—instinct," wrote Susan Heckly, Lindsay's wildlife rehabilitation director, in an email. "Because young predators such as these gray foxes don’t have the benefit of seeing their parents catch food, wildlife rehabilitators need to give the babies the opportunity to practice hunting in a protected environment before they return to the wild."

The Lindsay hospital has cared for more than 5,100 native wild animals this year. Details about Lindsay hospital patient releases, including requested donation amounts, are here.
