Disappearing Waterfall Reappears

This waterfall along the regional trail on the Moraga-Lafayette border comes and goes with the rainfall.

We've had buckets of rain in the last 10 days.

Maybe you've noticed.

When there have been buckets, this disappearing waterfall reappears. It's on the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail a quarter-mile north of where the trail crosses Rheem Boulevard at the intersection of St. Mary's Road.

It will disappear again if the winter takes a turn for the dry, say no rain for 17 days straight. It will disappear for sure when the dry season takes hold in April or May.

I call it the Disappearing Waterfall. Anyone have a formal name for it?

It's the Moraga version of Yosemite - I call it "Morsemite Falls"

Another sure sign that the Earth is a living thing. There is a place near Death Valley where I witnessed a phenomenon that I am sure takes place in other places, but it is no less wondrous to behold. Up at the head of a long, steep-sided canyon in the Panamint Valley is Darwin Falls. The Falls have carved a grotto out of solid rock. A pool with sword ferns at its edge appears in this oasis, which is surrounded by some of the most foreboding landscape one can imagine, with daytime temperatures rarely below 100 degrees. The path leading to this place is a dry creek bed, by day. But as night falls and the temperature drops, that creek percolates up out of the dry bed and flows several inches deep in some places. As morning bring the ever present heat, the water sinks once again back into the desert floor. Be sure to camp some distance away from this creek, as by night, desert creatures large and small come to drink from the temporary waters.
