7th-Grader's Coat Drive To Warm Hurricane Victims

Ella Maisano, a student at Stanley Middle School, held a 'Cookies for Coats' drive Nov. 18 at Whole Foods in Lafayette.

Lamorindans dug into their closets, and their hearts, and donated about 100 coats in a "cookies for coats" drive organized by a Stanley Middle School seventh-grader, Ella Maisano.

The donors got a cookie as a thank-you. The cookies were provided by Whole Foods of Lafayette, which was the site of the coat drive on Sunday, Nov. 18.

The coats are intended for beleaguered residents of the East Coast who lost homes — and coats — in the devastation of Hurricane Sandy earlier this month. Children's retailer Carter's is shipping coasts through the hurricane relief efforts K.I.D.S. (Kids in Distressed Situations).

In a local blog, you can read about Ella's fund-raising excellence
, including an effort to gather shoes for people in Japan laid low by the earthquake and tsunami a couple of years ago.

Ella's mom, Roxie McFarland, saluted the support from the Whole Foods team, especially marketing manager Jane Schaffer.
