An auxiliary of Assistance League® of Diablo Valley, Assisteens® comprises a group of teens from 16 different schools who want to make a difference in the Contra Costa community by improving the lives of children, adults, and seniors.   Established in 1977, energetic teens have raised funds to host such events as two holiday parties for elementary schoolchildren, corresponded with homebound seniors, made holiday decorations and sang carols at a local retirement home, and provided snack packs for children in crisis. Funds are raised by staffing at Assistance League Way Side Inn Thrift Shop in Lafayette, car washes and an annual fashion show. As important, Assisteens have also had fun while learning organizational and leadership skills at monthly meetings and national conferences.

Courtney Monasch, Vice Chairman Public Relations, reported that on Saturday, December14, 45 Assisteens joined together to spread holiday spirit to 50 children in need at Meadow Homes Elementary School, in Concord, CA.  Festive music played in the background as the Assisteens accompanied the children in activities such as coloring, musical chairs, and face painting. Frosting and sticky hands were a common theme at the cookie station. The cheer continued when Assisteens and the children ate a delicious pizza lunch together. The highlight was the arrival of Santa Claus who delivered the presents that were on the children’s wish lists.

Even the shy kids couldn't contain their happiness and gratitude when receiving individually selected gifts.  One reaction was timeless, “I always get excited to have presents to open since Santa sometimes doesn’t have time to deliver to everyone.”  As a third year Assisteen, Treasurer Emily Osgood said, "I look forward to the event every year."  Obviously, this event was fun for both the recipient students, as well as the Assisteens.  To learn more about Assistance League of Diablo Valley and Assisteens, please visit this website: diablovalley.assistanceleague.org.
