More than 30 gather for workshops on social media, business listings and Patch tools
More than 30 business owners gathered Tuesday morning with Lamorinda Patch staffers for a Main Street Meet-Up at the Veterans Memorial Building to learn about social media, blogging and online business tools. The informal, very Patchy — and free — gathering is built to give business owners already using Patch and those who want to use Patch insight into how doing so will help increase their visibility. If you missed today's event, we'll be holding another Main Street Meet-Up May 22 in Benicia, so email us at JulieDPatch@gmail.com if you'd like to RSVP.

There's more than just peanuts and Crackerjacks waiting at the ballpark for users of mobile data.
When Lafayette-resident Mike Birdsall sings “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” he’s thinking of something way better than simply sitting idly in the stands with peanuts and Crackerjacks. He’s the CEO of Lafayette-based FanconneX, a software company that makes it possible for users of mobile devices, like smartphones and tablets, to send and receive information about an event while it’s actually happening. This class of software is referred to as mobile venue apps, or MVAs, and they mark a shift in mobile computing both in technical terms of how handheld devices process and present data, and how venues and event organizers interact with fans during events. FanconneX was a very early mover in developing and deploying MVAs, and it continues to …

Lafayette's Lava Pit restaurant never quite connected with the customer niche it was looking for, apparently, and a troubling sign of the times has appeared in their front window.
Fans of Lafayette's Lava Pit restaurant will be saddened to hear that the location will be closing May 4, with the restaurant chain saying they will be focusing their efforts on their remaining Lamorinda location in Orinda. A sign in their window attributes the closure to "unforeseen factors," and we'd be interested to hear what those might have been. The restaurant will close for good at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 4. Co-owners Sam Lim and Eddie Chan cut the ceremonial ribbon on their second Lamorinda location, next to Trader Joe's, in August of 2010. Aloha and mahalo, guys.

We weren't able to reach anyone in an official capacity to confirm or deny reports that the day rate to park your car at the underground Theater Square lot doubles tomorrow, Tuesday, so we'll just have to wait for the sound of wailing commuters.

If you happen to be one of the folks who squeezes their commuter car into a stall under the fabled Orinda Theater you may still be reeling at the news that, starting Tuesday, the day rate for parking there will double from $10 to $20. Only $16 if you validate. But still... ouch. Lamorindan John Galt saw the signs go up a week ago and set to coming up with a Plan B -- an end-around to find alternative parking, and to boycott Theater Square. "Unfortunately, this will effectively kick out the daily parkers," Galt writes. "Most of these were casual commuters, which will severely disrupt the car pools that leave from Theater Square, and drastically exacerbate the parking issues at BART, where the $1 lot already fills up around 7:45 a.m." John…

Craving a double-double, animal style? The burger chain with a cult following is expected to open in May on Contra Costa Boulevard and Chilpancingo.
The two crossed palm trees on Contra Costa Boulevard aren't a freak of nature — they're the 'X' that marks the spot where Pleasant Hill's new In-N-Out will be. The burger chain synonymous with Californian fast food is gearing up to open its 274th store at 570 Contra Costa Blvd. in the Pleasant Hill Shopping Center. According to a construction worker on site, the Pleasant Hill In-N-Out will start flipping burgers May 17. But an employee at the company's head office in Irvine said the official date would not be known until a week or so prior, although doors are indeed expected to open sometime in May. Either way, it's a win for Lamorindans who fancy their burgers the In-N-Out way. The restaurant is now hiring and will hold open interviews …
