SMC's "Brother Ron" To Step Down As "Top Gael" Next Year

Brother Ronald Gallagher to return to teaching, college to search for a new president

Brother Ronald Gallagher, President of Saint Mary’s College, announced Monday that he would be stepping down from his position next year.

Gallagher, who became President in 2005, received his B.A. in English from Saint Mary’s in 1969, and then went on to earn his M.A. in comparative literature from San Francisco State University in 1975 and his doctorate in comparative literature at University of Washington in 1990.

Before becoming president, Gallagher was a member of the English Department at Saint Mary’s and served as vice chancellor at Bethlehem University from 1993 to 1997.

Gallagher will finish his term on June 30, 2013, according to a letter from the school.

The college will soon be searching for a new president, preferably a Brother Christian. However, in 2003 the college’s bylaws were changed to allow non-Christian Brothers to become president, due to the diminishing numbers of Christian Brothers.
