The news release gave this account:

"We have suffered a number of mail thefts in Burton Valley with crooks prying open mail boxes. Well last night our officers were checking on Happy Valley School. After checking the school, the drove down the road and encountered a suspicious vehicle, occupied by a male and female (0415 in the morning).

"The officers contacted the pair, located a pry device and also located a large quantity of mail from addresses that were not theirs.  Officers took them both into custody.

"They were both booked at the Martinez Detention Facility for possession of burglary tools, possession of stolen property and several drug charges. Detectives from Lafayette and Orinda then began a series of search warrants and during the service of the warrants located property that had been taken from thefts in Orinda and mail stolen from previous mailbox thefts in Lafayette. We are working links to these two for other thefts from the last several months."
