Commercial Burglaries Reported Overnight In Downtown Orinda

Orinda police are investigating a pair of overnight burglaries of local businesses.

Police hope the person or persons who entered a pair of downtown Orinda businesses overnight left some telltale evidence behind.

Business owners in the 100 block of Moraga Way reported two neighboring businesses were victimized, with thieves apparently entering through the roof to access money and business equipment.

A man answering the phone at the Turquoise Mediterranean Grill -- one of the businesses victimized -- confirmed news of the break-in but declined further comment Wednesday.

A neighboring business was also burgled with the same method of entry used.

Is our current economic state contributing to this apparent spike or is it always like this and we just didn't hear about it before?

My impression is that crime is up in Lamorinda. However, I have not seen any crime stats. LamorindaPatch would do a real service to the community if they could publish comparative crime data for the three cities. I do acknowledge that Brad Katkowsky is correct: you make number do what you want. However, we need a place to start the analysis.

natalie, that's a really good question. in lafayette, it does seem that home burgleries are on the increase, but i'm not sure more generally. patch does a good job of disseminating all this information on a 'real time' basis, that's for sure.

It's hard to say. You have to look at the numbers and as my old college statistic professor used to say: you can make numbers do anything you want. So, perception I would say yes, but what's the best way to uncover the reality? Statistics? Brings you back to my earlier reference.

Consider an alarm system. Most insurance companies offer discounts if you have an alarm system installed at your property. Be prepared – Burglary usually happens to those who are least prepared. Although no security system is 100 percent effective, there are many things that you can do to reduce chances of becoming a victim.
Assess your vulnerability, if you don't have the time or know how to do it, hire a professional.
